Lions Clubs International was founded by an American, Melvin Jones in 1917. He felt there was a need to help those who were disadvantaged. His mission,to create and foster a spirit of understanding among the people for humanitarian needs, by preparing voluntary services through community involvement,and international cooperation.

From one Lions Club it became a world wide network, of involving many hundreds of thousands of lions members. The first lions club in the U K was in London in 1950, by 1984 the 800th lions club was chartered. There were over 20,000 members in Ireland, Scotland, Engand and Wales and in 1992 the 900th club was formed and the UK and Ireland was designated District 105 with with thirteen sub divisions, with each sub division presided over by a District Governor who is elected annually.

Lions Clubs International Headquarters is based in Oakbrook Illinois USA. An International President is elected every year assisted by International Directors hence countries all over the world have an opportunity to provide an International President or Directors.

In 1984 Bert Mason of Belfast became the first District 105 Lion member to become an International President. Men and Women can now become Lion members. In 2004 Her Royal Highness Countess of Wessex became Patron of the Lions Clubs of the British Isles
